Dr Pixie:
The subject of enlarged labia has really got you talking. A lot of you wondered, is it normal to have one side bigger than the other? Absolutely! It’s totally fine, don’t worry about it. We are all different.

Some of you wondered if large labia can affect health and cleanliness and ‘do they give rise to more infections’. Because the cells on the inside of the labia are actually mucus-producing, so they produce secretions, what happens is they actually make the labia stick together. And that can make people feel like they’re unclean or can sometimes give rise to maybe a slight smell. But in no way do they cause infections or any medical problems.

A lot of you have asked, will your labia get larger as you get older? The chances are, they will, and a lot of times this is related to the number of natural births you have.

A lot of you wondered, what do you actually do to deal with enlarged labia? Well, there is a procedure called labiaplasty—which again is something that’s got you all talking and passing comments about—which can be done through a cosmetic surgeon. It is not a routine procedure on the NHS, and is usually done by a surgeon who feels there is a clinical need based on pain or discomfort or distress to the patient. If you’re concerned about your labia, they’re causing you pain or psychological disturbance, it is always worthwhile talking to a doctor.

I'm 15 and have one labia bigger than the other :( I'm a Virgin and don't plan to be having sex this year or anything but I have been insicure about this for about two years now. I'm too embarrassed to go to my parents because it's not something I would talk about to them, I want surgery but I'm too young and I doubt I will be aloud, I'm so insicure and so scared about how people/future partners may react! Help :(

I'm 15 and currently having anxieties regarding my vagina's structure. Truth is my right labia is bigger than the left one. Is this even normal? Do I have a Hormonal imbalance? I'm just to shy to ask my parents nor my close guardians about it.

I'm 17 years old and have a problem with my labia. I have always thought mines were different to others, from my friends to pictures I have seen whilst researching, I know lots of people ask the same question but I feel like I actually have a problem. My labia are about a inch in length when standing up, they are a pink/purple colour and are very wrinkled, I have never had sex before so I am wondering if it's a genetic thing or if I'm just abnormal. I'm too embarrassed to talk to my mother or a doctor about this situation. I sometimes feel discomfort with them in the way I sit or the clothing I wear and I'm of course extremely self conscious. I have contemplated getting surgery done for both a self esteem issue and to free me from the irritation with I encounter daily. Any advice?

In terms of how you describe them, I don't think you should be self-conscious about how they look. All of the aspects you have mentioned are beautiful. Our genitals are tremendously unique (although like all other body parts, there is a strong genetic component), and there is no ideal to aspire to. That's actually a wonderful thing. Learning more about how much women differ in this respect could help make you realize that being unique doesn't make you abnormal, it makes you special and beautiful. I would recommend reading wikipedia's labia article, and in particular check out the images in the additional images section showing how diverse labia can be. Our differences are something to treasure, and I hope you will begin to see that.

Absolutely not. Your labia color, texture, and size is genetic. You can't make your labia bigger or smaller from any activity.

Hi, I'm 14, with a large labia... It wasn't noticeable until I was about 11, when I was one day taking a shower, an I realised.. I soon asked my grandmother, an she said it wasn't normal, that she hadn't of seen anything like it.. I am really insecure about my body, I don't go swimming.. I refuse to wear tights. I won't ever let another guy see me down there.. It really scares me, in the future what is another male going to think? I always cover myself up, an even then I'm still very insecure, so really, all I need is some advice.. Also I was wondering for the future, does the longer labia, affect females from having children? I really need to get this sorted.. An with being so insecure about my body, I won't go see a doctor.. I don't want anyone looking down there.. I'm really freaked out. I do defiantly want to ge it removed if that was a possible procedure to go by! I really don't want it.. Please! Help!

Kirsty, as regards to other males seeing your vagina, there would be an incredibly amount of small guys that would have a problem with it. many guys don't actually in fact take as much notice as you might think. especially if you're having sex with a guy you like, they won't care. at the end of the day to them a vagina is somewhere for pleasure, or further, the deepest intimacy anyone can reach. as long as you're clean down there, and probably neatly shaved, guys won't mind. so don't worry about that. your grandmother is wrong on this as larger labias are in fact very normal at any age. so don't feel abnormal, or even unique to have big labias!! Because it is completely normal. if by the age you are 18, it is possible for you to be assessed and talked through the procedure of a labia reduction. it does not remove the labia (because they are in fact needed for a bit of extra protection and to keep bacteria out) however the procedure does involve cutting the labia down so it fits nicely into the vagina, unable to be seen standing up.

Your grandma is incorrect Kirsty. The labia come in MANY shapes, sizes, and textures. No two woman have the same labia. Men don't care. Most are just happy to be down there. Most surveys show guys actually prefer a larger labia. Your labia is a sign of sexual maturitity. It isn't anything to be embaressed of. If a guy care, he is horribly immature and uneducated. The labia is designed to keep bacteria away from the vagina. It does not cause any issues during child birth because it is natural, it is meant to be there. Do not get it removed. That is silly, expensive, and has potential dangerous side effects. Learn to love it. Confidence is far more important.
