Dr Christian:

A large number of you have written in with questions about faecal incontinence. It’s a very difficult and embarrassing subject for people and talking about it is probably the single most important and difficult first step that you can make in getting it sorted.

Faecal incontinence is not a condition in itself but rather it’s a sign or a symptom of another underlying condition and it’s that that you need to get diagnosed and treated.

A large number of you have left messages asking about the link between childbirth and faecal incontinence. Well, childbirth is probably the single most common cause of faecal incontinence. One woman here writes that since having a baby, when she needs to poo she barely has time to get to the bathroom. The reason for this is that childbirth, during the process of delivery, can damage the muscles, the sphincter muscles that control defecation. If these are damaged then it’s very difficult to hold the poo in. If you are suffering from faecal incontinence after you’ve had a baby, do go and get it properly investigated. It may be embarrassing but treatment is available.

Someone here has left a message saying sometime when they have sex sometime they poo them self and they are very embarrassed by this. Well, actually this is surprisingly common and faecal incontinence can be caused by anything that increases the pressure down below. Sneezing, jumping, laughing, doing sports and even having sex can all sometimes cause it. If you have been suffering from it do go and get it properly investigated because it can be treated.

Some of you have left messages asking whether incontinence, particularly faecal incontinence, can be linked to diet. Actually yes it can. Incontinence that’s associated with diarrhoea and constipation are often linked to dietary problems. Improving your diet, drinking water and increasing the amount of fibre or even having a consultation with a dietician to look at your dietary lifestyle could all help solve the problem for you.

I havn't been diagnosed as having feacal incontinence but i expect i have as after every bowel movement i get water coming out. It's not mucus it is water. It makes my underwear very soaked so have to wear a long sanitary towel, which in turn makes me very self concious and have to wear long cardigans so as not to notice it. Would i need any surgery at all?

I suffer from feacal incontinence because I have a constant flow of clear mucus from my bowel just like a running nose. Is the mucus caused by my diet?
