Wow! I had no idea that this problem was so wide spread! I'm 30 and i can remember back into my early teens problems I had with my bladder. I always went to the loo before going on trampolines because I found out I'd completely wet myself, but even when I had been to the loo it happened anyway much to my dismay. I also remember walking home from school having a laugh and joke with some friends and again completely wetting myself but fortunately ii was wearing a long skirt so wasn't that noticeable to my friends! I would always wet myself whenever my father repremanded me for being naughty too which was embarrassing. I still get stress incontinence now, but I didn't realise you could do something about it until now! Very helpful stuff, think I'll be paying a visit to my gp in the near future :)
I have a 6 year old boy who has always had an overactive bladder. I have seem specialists that have put him on oxybutnin but this hardly does very much.I know people say he may grow out of it but it is really affecting his life he comes home wet every day from school not wanting to change himself incase someone sees him , he refuses to drink much during the day as he is scared he will have more accidents. His teachers dont really understand and say he is starting to smell and dont support him very much. If he needs to go he has only minutes to get there and even then leakage will have occurred. He wont stay at friends houses or go on day events due to embarrassment. He has also in the last week started soiling himself which we are trying to find out if this is linked to incontinence or not.He is a lively intelligent boy who asks me all the time why if his bladder is not working properly why can't the doctors fix it. Please help if any suggestions as I have run out of answers.
If your GP is not helping much then you can normally self refer yourself to your local Continence Advisory service, you can in West Sussex for exaple. Also very young children can be taught to self cathertise too. Hopefully you will get some help by seeing the Continence Service.
Hi, My wife is a Continent Nurse withe the NHS and as such can be seen through an appointment via you GP. Often she says that the 'pelvic floor muscles' (which can be tested by physical examination) arent strong enough to stop incontinence, one resolution to incontinence. In addition there are other scans and tests that can be carried out, and also pads, but dont rely upon products before getting seen. Continence nurses and other professionals can sort out many of the issues I have sen on the TV, dont suffer in silence, see your GP and push to see a 'Continence Nurse' and start living your life without worry and looking for the toilet. All the best, Just trying to help!
