Dr Christian meets a 69 year old patient who, after suffering from the bacterial infection Prostatitis, was later diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Symptoms of prostate cancer can involve urinary problems such as needing to pee frequently and a weakened flow. New developments in treatments such as keyhole surgery mean that treatment can be administered quickly and with minimum invasion and soon patient Richard and his wife can continue with their usual routine.

I had a blood test 18 months ago which showed a high PSA - 7.0. 16 biopsy samples where taken (it was painful after about 10)and the results all found to be negative. 12 monthsllate I sufferred a retention and had to have a TURP operation. Recovoery was progressing well until I was recalled to be advised the biopsies had found 2% of cells cancerous - a shock given the bioopsies taken 12 months earlier. subsequent examinations and scan tests showed the cancer was contained within the prostate and had not spread. The alternative treatment swere explianed and I elected for keyhole surgery for total removal of the prostate. This was carried out in late November 2010 and was successful but has left me with after effects of incontinence and erectile dysfunction which I am now dealing with. The incontinence was bad to begin with but now after 3 months and coninuous pelvic exercises, it has reduced such that I do not suffer any accidents except for a sudden sneeze - hopefully with time this will also disappear as my muscels strengthen. I still have to deal with the the erectile dysfunction and will shortly commence the use of viagra. A reassuring fact is that one of my university friends (we studied together)had the same operation 5 years ago and he has completely recovered all functions and control. this makes me very optimisitc I will do the same with time

I had a 6.5 PSA level two years ago. I worried a lot, my Doctor prescribed a biopsy, it was the most excriciating pain I had ever endured,it was murder of the prostate. 10 pieces of the annoying gland were removed. All was ok. Now I hear of false positives. I died that day. I decided to do some research and pursue a holistic approach and used 3,000 units of saw palmetto daily plus the juices of raw cilantro, spinach, tomatoes, garlic, apple cider vinegar, carrots and exercise. I feel like a champ, honest. The swelling is disappearing and it feels good down there.
