It is estimated that 6 million people in the UK suffer from urinary incontinence, and it is twice as common in women as men. In this exclusive guide, Dr Harper explains the causes of this surprisingly common, but distressing, condition and advises on the exercises, techniques and surgery that can help alleviate the problem. Suffering in silence is the only option no longer available.

hi, i am 20 and i have been suffering with a bladder problem for 4years, and i have been under my doctors care for 3years. an under the hospital for around 2 and a half years. i have tried many tablets and also had a small op to see if my bladder is normal inside. i also have another op booked next month. i hadnt had much luck with it getting any better i bascially live on cranberry juice as anything else seems to go straight through me!
i used to get up around 4-5times every night until i found an american website called Steve G Jones clinical hypnotherapist. and now i dont go during the night at all. it is for OAD [over active bladders]. it hasnt helped much during the day but thought it might help those who suffer with sleep loss because of it.

That's interesting what she said about that implant thing. I think that might well help my problem as I think mine is more a bladder problem than a PC muscle problem. I tried pelvic floor exercises but they did nothing, so I am inclined to think its a bladder / urethra type problem.
I was brave and saw my GP, she tried me on drugs which had no effect, then I saw a gynecologist. I am having urodynamic tests done in 2 weeks so hopefully after that they can recommend a treatment of some kind, and I can get on with my life.
Its not always to do with having children either- I am 25 with no children. I should not have to put up with this, no one should. I advise all of you to be brave and go to your GP.

i am not sure that i have a urinary problem or not. I've had this since my teens. I sweat and i somehow leak although i don't feel myself doing this so i'm not sure if it is just sweat or not.My underwear is very damp every single day and i have to watch what clothes i wear as the dampness comes through my clothes e.g trousers but i am also on pins when i wear a dress/skirt as i am paranoid in case it comes through after i have been sat down for a bit. I can also smell and sometimes i wonder if anyone else can smell it to. It's even worse on holiday and i hate it.

I had exactly the same problem, it was explained to me that the muscle was weak so I couldn't feel it or clench it to exercise it. You need a stim machine, it is like slendertone for the vagina, it makes the muscles contract, stimulates blood flow and encourages regrowth of damaged nerves (lack of sensation after childbirth)I got a Kegel8 and it is amazing, I felt different within weeks, they are not paying me, but I want to tell as many women as possible so they don't waste time suffering like I did.

After a difficult delivery with a big baby, I started seeing a physio as i leaked urine occasionally. She recommended electrical stimulation as i found pelvic floor exercises very hard to do. I purchased an at home device and I saw results within weeks and did not pysically have to do anything. What is important is to carry on otherwise it can easily weaken it.

I DID GO AND SEE MY GP WHO DID REFERR ME TO PHYSIO FOR MAINLY BACK PAIN, BUT THEY TOLD ME IT IS ALL DOWN TO MY CORE MUSCLES CAUSING INSTABIAITY. I NEED TO DO PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISE BUT I CAN NOT FEEL ANYTHING WHEN I AM DOING THEM AND ALSO FIND IT EXTREMLY DIFFICULT. I HAVE HAD TWO CHILDREN. IS THERE ANYTHING WHICH CAN HELP ME BUILD UP THAT STRENGHT OR AT LEAST HELP FEEL WHAT I AM DOING
