Women who suffer from excessive facial hair (or hirsuitism) can feel extremely self-conscious, but the condition is not uncommon and affects up to 15% of women. In this exclusive guide, Dr Harper discusses the symptoms and causes of this condition, as well as the best treatment options available. Excessive facial hair can be embarrassing, but there are plenty of ways to remove it, either temporarily or on a more permanent basis.

If you’re suffering from any of the conditions featured on this site and want to apply for an onscreen consultation with one of the EB team then you can find more details here >>

Hi
I'm 17 now and have been getting excess facial and body hair probably for a couple of years now.
I mean, it's not that bad, but I can see that it's probably going to start spreading and I REALLY don't want that to happen.
I hear that you can take a contraceptive pill that might be able to help reduce it and seeing as I'm in a long term relationship, I think this could work out quite well for me.
Could you tell me what the name of this contraceptive pill is and whether I can just go to the clinic and ask for it or whether I have to speak to my doctor about it first?

I would like to get Laser treatment for excess facial hair but don't know which is a reputable clinic. Can you advise please.

I spent years worrying about excess body hair on my face and legs. It caused me to lose confidence when I met men and got me down so much that I deciced to have laser hair treatment. It is the best thing I have done. I no longer worry if the sun is shining on my face or if a man touches my chin! The cost of the treatment was well worth it as I have got my confidence back.

Hi everyone I have a tash which I had laser hair removal on about 4 times, it did work but as I am quite fair haired I should have gone back a few more times. (and I will do after uni) it cost me £40 each time with a reputable clinic about 4 years ago. I currently bleach it which works really well and leaves the hair super soft although I do have to reapply every 3 weeks. I also have tummy hair which I bleach a couple of times a year – I really dont mind this. I also have to pluck nipple hairs out which can then in grow. Overall being a little hairy doesnt bother me

umm, just wondering whether or not, plucking eyebrow hairs keeps the hair away longer than using hair removal cream. hairs seem to grow back really quickly after i pluck them. would you recommend using hair removal cream instead ?

Hey, i'm a 14 yr old girl who has hair on upper lip, torso, back and cheecks and adding to that my adams apple is getting bigger sticking out.

I'm feeling really suicidal and havn't told anyone about anything, nor do i plan on doing so.

I just really need some help =]

I'm not really a hairy person and my hair is very fair but embarrassingly I get quite dark, coarse hair on my nipples. I know this can't be right because it's the darkest hair everywhere on my body (apart from the downstairs). whenever I see the hairs I pluck them out but they do keep coming back. It's a bit unsightly!

I have had excess hair on my face and body since I hit puberty at 11 years old. I wax my arms every 4 weeks and for years I waxed my upper lip and just belached my sideburns, but my sideburns have gotten worse and the skin on my upper lip has been damaged due to waxing. I can't put my face in the sun because I suffer from hyperpigmentation.

I am now going for electrolysis on my upper lip and side burns and it's getting so much better and it is permenant and not as costly as laser and doesn't hurt!

Please stop shaving, waxing and using hair remover cream on your face, try electrolysis I would highly reccommend it!

There are a list of registered electrologist on the BIAE website

Good luck everyone!

Hi,
I'm 17 and I am so hairy.. I get on my lip, bottom of my back stomach chest and arms.. I hate being out in the light, I never wear girly low cut tops. I shaved it all and it comes back so horribly I went to the doctor and they done nothing. I hate it so much, I even use hair removal cream on my hands and fingers leaving them sore for a couple of days, I just want the hair on my chest gone. it is not like long hair it is just like body hair but really dark..

hi, im now 34, ive had facial hair since i was 14! ive tried removal creams, bleaching, shaving, waxing and electrolosis (WHICH HURTS) none of these have helped me! i now tweezer the individual hairs but its time consuming and i end up with spots when the little so and so's grow back. however, dont dispair there are men out there that dont mind! i have a 7 year old son and my partner didnt care. it still depresses me but i try to make the most of life as my sons dad has terminal cancer and i need to carry on for him. the best thing to have is good friends that support you. jo x
