Quick Health Advice: Bad Breath

Around 95% of us suffer from halitosis (or bad breath) at some time in our lives, and one in four adults suffer from it on a regular basis. In this exclusive guide, Dr McKenna demonstrates a simple technique to check for bad breath, and advises on ways we can ultimately prevent the ‘death breath’. She also reminds us that around 90% of bad breath cases are due to poor oral hygiene, so a visit to the dental hygienist at least once a year wouldn’t hurt. Well, it might do…but would you rather have bad breath?

If you’re suffering from any of the conditions featured on this site and want to apply for an onscreen consultation with one of the EB team then you can find more details here >>

More help needed please! A benign tumour (polyps) can be stinky. No help given though. Very very difficult. No partners in Keep Fit. People step back. Relations try to hide disgust. Friends offer peppermints when they get in the car! Please help!

I think I have catarrh, when I blow my nose into a tissue it smells awful. Like either cabbages, onions or a really horrid smell like a baby's nappy. I know that is horrible, but it has got to the stage where I wonder if that is why I have been single most of my life - and lack of confidence. I brush my teeth for 3 minutes at a time and I know that I am aware of it and always carry a mouth spray. I have tried head over steam inhaling to clear the airways. A man once told me I had a smelly breath, but his was stinky most of the time anyway and I was too nice to tell him. But now I can taste it and it's not good to think that people smell this when I talk. I work in a medical environment and am aware how this may be to visitors. Any good advice that we all can take on board?

Poor higyene is not really the major the cause of bad breath.. I know of people who has poor dental hygiene and their breath is just fine.. on the other hand I know of people who brushes/mouthwashes almost compulsively and yet has an awful breath, it could be due to a lot of conditions but most of the time is given to tonsil stones. I've heard that grape seeds extract do help out with tonsil stones and bad breath.. I haven´t tried it yet but salt mouthwashes and antibiotics haven´t helped a bit.

Hi i have a very bad breath problem. I am 14 and have had it for about a year and a half. I thought at first it might just be the effects of being a teenager but the problem is a constant. I have to chew gum all the time otherwise i cant talk to anyone, it is that bad. Im a healthy person, i use a tongue scraper, mouthwash, floss you name it.After i brush my teeth and do all of there i get bad breathe about 10 mintutes later, Its a constant, never fresh. I have these tiny red bumps at the back of my mouth which i think are Circumvallate Papillae, i have tried to do abit of research but not alot of luck. I really dont know what to do anymore, im a teenager, i should be socialising and having fun but i cant because of this. Its got to the point where something needs to be done, it seems such a small problem but it is really having an impact of my life. Please can you help. Thankyou

I have always had bad breath from being a teenager when other kids use to make fun of me. It seems to be getting worse for the last 6 months. I have regular dental check ups, good oral hygiene, clean my tongue and floss daily, i use anti-bacterial mouthwash twice a day and constanley using mints or sugar free gum. I seem to have a bad taste at the back of my mouth all the time, my saliva seems to be stringy and like thick mucus especially in the morning. I do not suffer with a dry mouth and my diet is good. I do not smoke, drink much alcohol or coffee and do not often eat spicy foods. This is now a massive problem as i know people call me behind my back but also stay away from me. I don't want to go out to pubs with friends (I only have a few friends which makes me think it's because of my breath)as i am to scared to talk to others. I am recently single, it scares me now to even talk to another man. My confidence is now becoming low. I am with a NHS dentist and do not seem interested, it is so embarrassing and have not discussed my problem with anyone ( not even family) Please can you advise me what i can do.

You are not alone, try cleaning your teeth with bicarbote of soda, after cleaning your teeth mix half a teaspoon with water and gargle thouroughly with it. also gargle with hydrogen peroxide mixed with water half and half. It does help better than the mouthwashes we get from over the counter, which can make the condition worse.

Im seventeen and not sure how long ive had bad breath it was only when my partner told me i became aware for myself i brush i floss i brush my tounge and use mouth wash but literally 20 mins after its like i never brushed when i wake up in the morning the whole room smells of it and is really affecting my life im pregnant now and afraid i wil go into labour before geting chance to brush im also scared if my baby sleeps in the same room it wont get enough clean air and possibly have cot death please help
