Quick Health Advice: Moles

You might not believe it, with our experience of the great British weather, but more people die of skin cancer in the UK than in Australia. In this exclusive guide, Dr Jessen stresses the importance of being familiar with our skin and any moles we might have, and provides simple and effective ways to check ourselves. He also advises on the safest way to enjoy the sun and dispels some myths along the way. You can’t catch the sun on a cloudy day? Think again…

I have a black mole on my chin which I have had since birth but I have decided to get rid of it after 21yrs as I have been bullied about it all my life. I wanted to know if anyone who has had it removed has been left with any prominent scars. Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences shared.

Hi. I'm 24 and have a raised mole / tag on the edge of my right eyebrow (nearest my nose) and one on the top side of my nose (near my eye) on the right side also. I've been to my GP and was due to have both removed, as my GP said it would easily scrape off and then I'd just need a few stitches. But the doctor set to do the minor surgery was very unsympathetic to my questions, saying it would 'most definitely scar' (not evening answering me when I asked if it would be a small / large scar) and in the end I didn't go through with it because he frightened me. I was wondering if anyone has ever had their moles removed? Especially ones on their face? I wouldn't mind if mine were near my ears, but they're right in the centre of my face, and I'd love for them to just disappear.

Hi there! I had a mole removed from my face a few months ago. It was about a centimetre in diameter and I'd hated it since I can remember (I'm 30 now). All the doctor did was lay me on a couch then inject around the mole with a local anaesthetic. That felt a bit like being pinched. Then she 'shaved' the mole off with a scalpel and cauterized the wound to stop it bleeding, during which I felt nothing at all! I walked out of the hospital with what looked like a cigarette burn on the middle of my cheek and I could smell the burnt skin for a couple of hours after which wasn't too pleasant, but now I'm left with a flattish, white scar no wider than the mole was originally, which is alot less noticable and barely visible at all when I'm wearing makeup! Seriously,If you'd be happier without the moles, go for it! Don't let some arrogant, insensitive Doctor put you off. Get a second opinion. :-)

Hi Please advise, my husband was out in Iraq in 2004 when he came home he found he had a mole on the back of his neck probably due to sun exposure, now the mole has grown larger, it doesnt bleed ,its not tender, its not crusty in anyway, tiny bit elevated at the top of the mole, it looks to be the same size all the way around it, its dark/black/light brown in areas its approx 6mm,It looks like a giant freckle but im sure its not.. i have an appointment booked at the GP for him, do i need to be very concerned? please help
