Quick Health Advice: Stress Incontinence

It is estimated that 6 million people in the UK suffer from urinary incontinence, and it is twice as common in women as men. In this exclusive guide, Dr Harper explains the causes of this surprisingly common, but distressing, condition and advises on the exercises, techniques and surgery that can help alleviate the problem. Suffering in silence is the only option no longer available.

I have had the prostate op. 3years ago could not go to Loo. 10 months later same problem. after 2nd op inspection I have now to use a catherta if I can`t pee. I get a discomfort pain before wanting to pee at the end of my penis which can go to the back passage, if I leave it to long the pain gets worse and I have to use a catherta, if I can pee i get a tingling feeling from my penis to my chest and down my arms, and I have to go nearly every 30mins and I get up a lot at night I can`t do a lot because I have to go because of the discomfort.

I'm 50 and I have stress incontinence. When I had my 2nd child, he was 9lb 2oz and about three laters I had an operation for a prolapse bladder. About two/three years ago, I went to see a consultant again because I was still suffering. I had physio but I couldn't continue with it as it coincided school closing times. Physio didn't help at all. I was supposed to have a further test after this to see how much my bladder held but as I didn't finish the physio, it didn't happen. Now I've been referred for the third time as when I sneeze unexpectedly while driving I wet myself and I need to change. It's mainly, sneezing, coughing, bending down, stretching in bed in the morning and also running for the loo in the morning. I have to wear pantyliners all the time except when I'm with my boyfriend as I don't want him to know that I wear them! I know I'm over weight which doesn't help the situation but I so fed up with it.

Had radical prostatectomy in 1994. After the op was incontinent. Had interferential treatment and was cured after about ten treatments. Now, 2009, seem to have a recurrence of sporadic incontinence which necessitates the use of a permanent pad. How do I go about making an appointment to see a specialist for a permanent solution. Watched your programme where a woman was completely cured by use of keyhole surgery.

Could you please remind me of the outcome of the tests to find the most effective pelvic/vaginal exercise equipment. I remember the show demonstrating three or four of them, with one being the outright most effective but cannot recall which one. thank you
