Quick Health Advice: Unwanted Facial Hair

Women who suffer from excessive facial hair (or hirsuitism) can feel extremely self-conscious, but the condition is not uncommon and affects up to 15% of women. In this exclusive guide, Dr Harper discusses the symptoms and causes of this condition, as well as the best treatment options available. Excessive facial hair can be embarrassing, but there are plenty of ways to remove it, either temporarily or on a more permanent basis.

If you’re suffering from any of the conditions featured on this site and want to apply for an onscreen consultation with one of the EB team then you can find more details here >>

I've had PCOS for over 20 years now. The only treatment the NHS will help with is infertility, and that only specifically if you want a child. Granted this is important and I'm so grateful for my daughter, but there are other problems that can be life threatening and life-ruining. I'm now insulin-resistant, 6 stone overweight, covered with hair and severely depressed. PCOS is only a "women's problem" and is often swept under the carpet. A pity, because the increased risk of heart disease, the raised cholesterol, the risk of diabetes II, not to mention the psychological problems must cost the NHS plenty. I just get told I need to lose weight but as anyone with the condition will tell you, that's next to impossible.

hi im 14 and my doctors think i have PCOS, since i have most if not all symptoms. i have hair on my upper lip which is quite dark and noticeably which i hate because it makes me feel like a freak. i always feel like people are looking at me because of it. At the moment my doctor prescriped a cream called Vaniqa to help with the hair growth on my upper lip but so far nothing has happened and ive been putting it on twice a day for 3 months.
I also have dark patches under my arms even after i shave and im not sure what causes this or is its another symptom of PCOS.
i have had my period but ive heard people who have PCOS dont usually have many but ive already had 2 in the last 3 months.
if you could give me some advice it would help alot
thanks

I am a 17 year old girl and have excessive hair on my upper lip, belly and my lower back. It isnt really thick but it can get me really down. Will it always be like this or will it calm down once im older?

I'm 38, have PCOS...but according to NHS Dr's they don't treat it or its symptoms.

This is now become a HUGE problem…life threatening…since I am repeatedly being asked to attend the Dr's where I overheard nurses and staff last time I had a PAP smear done …laughing and joking about me…I have diabetes and don't shave anymore as I contracted MRSA and almost lost both legs…the hair growth is down my back, buttocks, legs, chest, face and arms and uncontrolable.

I no longer where anything that exposes these areas…it has raised very embarassing questions from children…so now I avoid situations involving friends and children

I avoid any form of examination for fear of ridicule. My weight has bloomed to over 18 stone and as a low income family am have problems providing special LOW GI diet food…if we can only afford the store generic meals 4 for £6..thats what we eat…I do eat fresh veg as much as I can and things like nuts.

I do excercise at least twice a week at home, again the mocking, stares at the gym and pool ruined that for me

I have had it since i was 13 it has been very hard for me beacuse i can't tell anyone beacuse they will call me a freak and if they see it they call me a freak anyway. I really want something to get ride of it i have tried all the creams out there.

Please help?

I am in my twenties and have excess hair on my upper lip which I've used creams etc on but it is growing back much thicker/darker and I would like to know what is the best way to get rid of it for longer periods & try get it to grow back thinner/lighter etc. I also have excess hair on my chin/neck/sides of my face which I don't want to start messing with but does affect my confidence especially since my skin is pale and my hair is dark.
